I realize that getting older, able to spend more time helping others as opposed to working, I may be scratching the same itch of demonstrating my power/worth/ability (even tho I'm not getting paid for it anymore)
Thanks for highlighting this, Greg, yeah the ego really evolves hey, and the altruistic cloak it can put on is convincing! For me the shift comes with presence, it let's me suss out what's authentic vs. what's ego. After becoming aware of ego, sometimes I continue doing the thing without the pride, sometimes I change how I'm doing the thing, sometimes I drop the thing all together. Our motives really matter in the outcome, and if there's a selfish motive in giving, the act won't really be helpful in the end.
